Today I dare to talk about a condition that I have lived with most of my life. It is a chronic condition which causes the sudden urge to run to the bathroom. Often times you’ll find that the amount of urine isn’t as much as you would think, based on the urgency. There are many reasons for this. You may feel embarrassed to talk about this, even to your doctor, but don’t be, because they hear it all the time, and can help improve your condition.
One of my major problems is waking up several times a night to run to the bathroom. Then I am so tired in the morning for not having gotten enough sleep. Another is traveling in a car and having the sudden urge to go, far from the next rest stop, and when I get there, I have such an extreme urgency that I sometimes let it go a little before I’m ready to. Seeing your doctor is the first step in relief, if you’ll excuse the pun. Here are some known causes of Over Active Bladder.

Another place I have found O.A.B. difficult to deal with is in the workplace. That frantic “what do I do now” situation makes concentrating on your work very difficult, not to mention not being able to sit still. I have found some ways to help curb this need to go. One way is to cut back on that morning coffee. Yeah, I know it’s difficult, and like any habit you may find something to replace it with, such as water. In the first place caffeine is a diuretic, which means your body will try to get rid of much-needed fluids. If you must have that coffee, try decaf. Decaf doesn’t mean that there isn’t any caffeine, but there is less. Personally, it doesn’t work well for me. There are some great tasting water products on the grocers shelves these days. You can try several to find one that you like best. Some are mineral, some packed with vitamins, and some with assorted juice flavors. Try herbal teas. Herbal teas in the real sense are not “tea”, but an infusion. I have many kinds on my shelf at home, and the flavors are endless. It’s a great way to replace that coffee.
I am all for natural remedies, so next time you visit your local Health and Nutrition Store, ask them to show you what they have for this condition. As with all remedies, always practice caution. Just because it says natural or herbal, doesn’t mean it is 100% safe.
